Day 18-21, Sydney, Australia; March 26-29, 2004
Friday, 07 July 2006

Next morning I was flying to Sydney unfortunately not directly but via Auckland (biggest airport in New Zealand) so again I was worried about the bike. The only thing I had to do at the check-in was to cover the chain with something.

1 hour to Auckland, then 1.5 waiting and then well over 3 hours to Sydney, and finally I could see again one of the most famous spots in the world - Sydney Operahouse, but this time from the air. Overall this was my second trip to Sydney, I was there few years ago on business.

One last thing about New Zealand. A surprise was waiting for me there. Yesterday I have spent my last NZ$ 20 plus for the ticket to the museum and now I was told at the check-in that I have to pay airport tax or something like that, and it was around $25. Blind me. Why wasn't I told about that before?

Later I realized that everyone leaving NZ has to pay that. So if you travel, make sure you have $25 in cash until last minute.

Australia

I had some problems getting out of the airport. When I say the motorway packed with rush hour traffic I initially wanted to take a van taxi, but with the bike wasn't that easy. Finally chose the train, and to my pleasant surprise did not have to pay for the bike outside rush hours. We should implement that in Vienna.

I found cheap hotel in Woolloomooloo, close to Kings Cross (be carefull there!) and last 2.5 days I spent cycling around the city.

Met old friends, had "few" beers and made tons of pictures. And basically was relaxing.

Most of my time I spent around Circular Quay watching the ferries, the other day I took one and went to Manly beach (North Sydney). And of course I had to see all the "must-see" spots in Sydney (Opera, Harbour Bridge, the tower, Darling Harbour). I skipped Olympic park - was too far.

Sydney is a great place to be but I was glad to be going home.

On the day of return I again took the train to the airport. With the bike, not problems whatsoever. The only difference was that I was given a tape to block the front wheel from moving sideways.

23 hours later I was home :-)

Distance in Sydney - ~60km
