Day 16-18, Darfield - Christchurch; March 23-26, 2004
Friday, 07 July 2006

Road to Christchurch was an easy one - 50 km only plus I already knew I have time and was flat and therefore I was in good mood again. Soon I will be heading home :-)

Now it was time for shopping, you cannot come home without any souvenirs.

I spent 2 days in Christchurch, now having more time I could see more things around the city. Also it is much easier to do so without the lagguge.

Took a trip to New Brighton to see and smell the ocean again. Funny thing you have Palace Pier in Brighton in UK, and here you in New Brighton in New Zealand you also have huge pier.

On last day in New Zealand I visited Antarctic Centre located just outside of Christchurch airport.

The best part there was the chamber where they simulate Antarctic storm, you get coats and boots and you go inside, after a while the "wind" starts to blow, becomes dark and temperature drops to ~-20°C - really cool!

Christchurch is the main gateway to Antarctica. Basically anyone who travels there must pass Christchurch, not only due to flights connections but to obtain any appropriate training here at the centre.

One more thing, when you travel there you do need the passport :-) There are not many places like that left...

So I was getting ready to say good-bye to New Zealand. Perhaps I will go there again. Very cool place.

Distance - 56 km; Average speeds - 17 km/h
