Day 11 & 12, Haast - Franz Josef - Greymouth; March 18-19, 2004
Friday, 07 July 2006
Time is getting short and I need rest. It is already 18th and I have to be in Christchurch in a week time and still have long way to go. Not willingly have to use public transport. Another thing is that I am running short on cash and next civilized area is about 200 km from here Smile

I am calling (from phone booth, forget mobile) a bus company and... have problem for today they do not have seats available! And there is only one bus a day!

I start asking people in caravans in which direction they are going and after few minutes found Dutch couple that would give me a lift with all my stuff.

So it turned out to be a good day. I could rest but at the same time was covering distance. We stopped in Fox Glacier and later I left this nice couple in Franz Josef.

In Franz Josef I have originally set up the tent, but later the rain was so heavy that water got under it and leaked inside! I quickly packed it and moved to a cabin.

Next day it was still raining as you can see...

The weather disappointed me, next day was raining again. Normally you do not start cycling when it is raining. I was waiting for a while to clear and after 11 a.m. decided to check on buses. Booked myself onto shuttle to Greymouth.

The camping in Greymouth was located just by the beach, fantastic location. It is great feeling to fall asleep listening to sea waves.

Distance - ~15 km; Average speed - ??? km/h
