Day 7, Queenstown - Cromwell; March 14, 2004
Friday, 07 July 2006

It looks like it is going to be a dreadful day. When I wake up it is still dark and raining. It is 7 a.m. and it is still dark! Light wind and chilly. I am running to the kitchen to eat breakfast before the masses of people wake up.

I leave around 9 a.m. Sun is getting through but all my rain gear is ready. Out of Queenstown is a bit up the hill but manageable. Today overall I should be going down to 200 m. The plan is Cromwell - 60 km - I do not want to go crazy with the knee. But at least today (after Canterbury plains) I can enjoy mountain sceneryCool

For a while I am riding along lake Wakatipu

I pass Arrowtown Junction. I mention this because of the fact that in Arrowtown Peter Jackson was shooting some scenes from Lord of the Rings!

I keep on going. Dry skin peels of my nose, I forgot to put sun block there at the beginning...

I stop by the bridge Kawaru river, where you can bungy jump for (only!) NZ$169. And this was the cheapest option. You can choose one where they shoot a video of you and this is well over $200. I watch for a while others jumping while drinking nice hot coffee. As usual I stole some sugar bags from one of the tables Smile I cannot buy whole 1kg bag so those coffee breaks are my only source of sugar.

I pass vineyards, narrow roads and going through Kawaru Gorge is simply great. I stop quite often and shoot pictures or just enjoy the environment trying to memorize each single element. It is so much different from home.

I stop at old gold mine to watch and rest a wee bit.

Cromwell is relatively new town created as town for workers building the dam. Waters blocked by the dam created new lake Dunstan. Now people live here from fishing, dam, lake and fruits. Whole Cromwell looks like a village with on floor houses where all streets cross at right angle. Camping looked strange but at least had a bar Smile Since the season was over I was the only guest with a tent.

Distance - 62 km; Average speed - 16.44 km/h
