Day 6, Oamaru - Queenstown; March 13, 2004
Friday, 07 July 2006

Should be nice and easy day. I was at the at bus waiting point well before arrival time. Wanted to make sure I wouldn't miss it.

I have big stress from the beginning. Bus driver says I have to "strip" my bike otherwise it stays! By stripping he means take wheels off, remove the pedals and turn the handle bar sideways. Great, it is worse that at the airport! I've got 10 minutes to do the job, people around looking at you as if you were a wierdo.

The bus goes to Dunedin, then I have to change for Queenstown. So I have another problem what will happen in Dunedin with all my stuff, will I have time to move everything from one bus to another...

Second driver appeared to be much much nicer and had no problems whatsoever.

During some conversation when we stopped somewhere it appeared that he (the driver) had Polish origins and was telling me that he even had been to Poland some time ago.

After Dunedin we headed north and after some time entered Otago. The scenery changed quite rapidly - hills, lakes, valleys, rivers - like on tourist folders. Different flora. Otago has also different regions and you could see how it changes - from mountainous nothingness (only wild bushes etc.) to fruit trees and fields ending with vineyards. Mountains and canyons immediately (at least to me) brought images from "Lord of the Rings".

I did not really like Queenstown, too many people and hotels (real hotels), too commercial. Everything to rip off the tourists. Wherever you look you see mountains, at least this was good. Queenstown is the capital of all crazy sports like bungy jumping, rafting, jet boating etc. But all of this costs lots of $$$.

Camping - even worse - millions of people and caravans. When I saw the kitchen there and saw the crowds I said to myself, no way, I am going to have something quick to eat in town and I have leave the place as soon as possible.

Very cold evening.

Distance by bike - 0 km; Average speed - 0 km/h
