Day 1, Vienna - Melk

Day 1, Vienna - Melk July 19, 2003

After many, many days of waiting and preparations I finally set off at 7:30. My family helped to get all my stuff downstairs, quick photo, good-bye, and that was it.

I knew the roads in and out of Vienna so no problems at that stage. Generally speaking all the time heading west. Danube River crosses Vienna roughly south-north, so I decided to make the shortcut and to intercept it again at Melk (objective of day 1) where it turns west.

First few hours were strange, first of all I had to get used to much, much heavier bike than usual. Additional 30kg can really disturb when you want to make a quick turn or stop. Well, somehow I managed. At least for the time being it was flat. Later it got worse... somewhere about 30 km outside of Vienna, I decide to make a shortcut and... spend 1.5 hrs climbing up the hill. That was my first one (but worse were to come yet).

Day 2, Melk - Linz
Friday, 07 July 2006

Day 2, Melk - Linz; July 20, 2003

Again did not sleep well, kept waking up most of the night.

Got up around 07:00, packed my stuff, ate a snack (Sneakers from previous day) as pre-breakfast and hit the road. Now I could feel every single muscle in my legs... the only way to tackle it is to pedal more and more. Sooner or later I will get used to it. One more thing, I forgot to take sun lotion/filter from home, and after the whole day under the sun I started to feel my burning skin, mainly left arm and leg. To make it worse somewhere on the road a bloody mosquito bit me :-( and of course it must have chosen my left side.

Day 3, Linz - Passau
Friday, 07 July 2006

Day 3, Linz - Passau; July 21, 2003

Start at 6:30, actually earlier for I still did not get used to sleeping mattress plus other people started to get up and every now and then you could hear unzipping sounds. After seven half of the camping was up. I pack the tent and can see that whole inside of the outside layer is wet. It must have been very damp during the night. No time, have to pack anyway. I will dry it later.

8 km later I find Spar and buy something to for breakfast and sit down at a coffee house near by. Real feast for €4.

Day 4, Passau - Wallersdorf
Friday, 07 July 2006

Day4, Passau - Wallersdorf; July 22, 2003 (Tuesday)

I am writing with the delay. So far it was the hardest day. They say that 3rd or 4th day is critical. They also say that once you get through this crisis, you should be all right.

So in Bavaria I was :) Left Passau early (as usual), always wanted to make as many kilometers as possiblie before the heat starts pouring from the sky. Very sunny day, you could have already said it would be hot later on.

Day 5, Wallersdorf - Regensburg
Friday, 07 July 2006

Day 5, Wallersdorf - Regensburg; July 23, 2003 (Wednesday)

I wake up and cannot stand up. Right leg, really hurts. Somehow I have to get either to Straubing or Regensburg. There I can find a camping. Straubing is not really on the way (too much towards north) but closer. Regensburg looking at map - ~60 km, and exactly on planned route.

While eating breakfast (included in the price) decided to struggle through to Regensburg. I know this will be a heavy day and cannot force my leg too much.

Till noon, half way through, was still fine. Could not ride fast but at least was moving. Partly cloudy, it is not so hot. Thaks God. Looks like it is going to rain, but that is still better that 40°C.

Day 6-8; Regensburg - Rothsee - Rothenburg
Friday, 07 July 2006

Day 6-8; Regensburg - Rothsee - Rothenburg; July 24-26, 2003

Thursday was boring. Whole day I was sitting and lying in front of my tent. Took a day off hoping that my hamstring would get better. My wife says I should at least try elastic band to stiffen it. Next to my tent there was a group of Hungarians, they were going to see the town, asked them if they could stop at the pharmacy - No problem I heard.
