I went today to the north part of Cyprus, which is occupied by Turkey since 1974. Very strange feeling. Living now in Europe where all walls fell, communism died (of natural causes) and there in small Cypriot island is divided into half and seems that nobody wants to do anything about that. I bought special insurance for the car for 10 Cyprus pounds per day. This insurance is obligatory, one you have from the rental company does not cover north side! With this you go to passport control booth and you fill in piece of paper with proud name Visa. You get a stamp, and off you go onto forbidden land as it used to be quite recently. Only last few years the border opens up a bit. Right after the border, first shock. Road signs are a bit different and all in Turkish. City names are in Turkish and are different from what I had on the map. Later on I also could see generally speaking the road markings and directions are not very well developed over there.

| Cyprus Trip | |||

Recently I had to spent few days in Cyprus, in Nicosia (or Lefkosia) with my team members. Only 4 days in the end, but we had quite some fun. Cyprus is really nice place to go to in September or October where is still very warm but not too hot, while back home you already need to wear a coat in the morning. Another thing is also that in that period main vacations season is over.

Basically the only way to get into Cyprus is Larnaka (south-east) with the main international airport. There is one more also in Paphos (south-west) but apparently smaller. Almost every day there is a direct flight from Vienna to Larnaka and after about 3 hours you can enjoy the sun.
To get out of the airport you need either taxi or rented car. Public transport in reality does not exist. And taxis are not cheap in Cyprus. Trip to the capitol Nicosia is the cost of minimum 25 Cyprus pounds that which is something like 50 euro and lasts around 50 minutes.
Two main things to remember – left hand side traffic and English type power sockets! So should you plan the trip over there… be prepared.

| Google Maps and Holidays | |||

Well, well, well.... those great lazy days have come! I have started my holidays! For next 4 weeks I will be sleeping, doing my model and otherwise not much, and that is the best part of it! Having travelled wee bit too much over last years and months, I prefer to stay home for a change. At least for now. That will most probably change one day, and I will again feel the desire of going places (already have some ideas...) Anyway, since it is free time, and Sunday... and I did not want to make too much noise with my wood tools, I started to play with the website. So found decent Google maps plug-in and added maps to my New Zealand photo blog under each day. Now the log looks even more interesting :) with the maps! So long for now! |
